NIE - Empadronamiento

If you are a resident of the EU, and you are thinking of living in Madrid for a long period of time (more than six months) you are required to get a NIE (Foreign Identity number). Here is how:

1. Request an appointment online https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/

• In the drop-dowm menu “Provincia seleccionada”, select the province where you will reside
• Next, select “Policía – Certificados UE”
• Click “Aceptar”
• In the new page, download y complete the EX- 18 form
• Go to the end of the page and click “Entrar”
• Complete the requested information (Passport number and name) then click “Aceptar”
• Click “Solicitar cita” and follow the instructions.

1. Download and complete the rate form:
• Before going to the appointment, you have to pay the rate form 790 (Cod. 12) 12,00€.
• Open the file (https://sede.policia.gob.es:38089/Tasa790_012/ImpresoRellenar) and complete it with your personal information. Click in the section “Certificado de registro de residente comunitario o Tarjeta de residencia de familiar de un ciudadano de la Unión”. Select “pagar en efectivo” and left blank the IBAN option. Click “submit” and the platform will generate a PDF file, print it and pay the rate at any bank in cash.

2. Check all the documents before the appointment:
• Proof of the appointment and the application of the official model EX-18, original and copy.
• Passport (original and copy)
• Copy of the payment in the bank of the model rate 790 (Cod. 12)
• Documentation proving that you have public (European Health Card) or private medical insurance
• Documentation that certifies why you are going to be in Spain: i.e. enrollment of the public or private education center, declaration of employer hiring, employment certificate, etc.

3. Check all the documents before the appointment:
• Proof of the appointment and the application of the official model EX-18, original and copy.
• Passport (original and copy)
• Copy of the payment in the bank of the model rate 790 (Cod. 12)
• Documentation proving that you have public (European Health Card) or private medical insurance
• Documentation that certifies why you are going to be in Spain: i.e. enrollment of the public or private education center, declaration of employer hiring, employment certificate, etc.


4. On the day of the appointment, be sure to comply with all the necessary documentation.

Social Security Number

To get your social security you have to go to the social security office, find the locations here: (http://www.seg-social.es/wps/portal/wss/internet/OficinaSeguridadSocial), you have to take your passport and form TA1 completed.
